It’s the start of a new year and for many of us this means a time to explore new opportunities including a new job. At Labourpower we see lots of resumes and applications, so here are some of our top tips on how to impress a recruitment company and give your job application the best chance of success.
5 ways to impress a recruiter and get your application noticed
1. Be qualified
A recruiter ends up with a pile of resumes when a position is advertised. The first review of your application will look for keywords that jump off the page showing that your background matches the role. If you want to be on the shortlist, then make sure you’re qualified to do the job you’ve applied for.
2. Know your strengths
Always make sure you address the selection criteria in the ad, so we know why you’re the best person for the job. Lead with your strengths and tailor your resume with information that’s relevant to the role you’ve apply for. If you need to provide a cover letter, address it to the person conducting the candidate search and include a brief overview of your experience and how you best fit the role.
3. Use positive language
Make sure the language you use in your cover letter and resume is always positive. So, if you’re applying for a casual position and you’re not available on Fridays, don’t write – not available on Friday. Instead, write that you’re available every day from Saturday to Thursday. The message is the same, but the language is much more inviting.
4. Do your homework
Once you’ve applied for a role, make sure you’re prepared if the recruiter does get in touch. Research the company you hope to work for or the type of work you’re looking for. It’s also important to think about the experience you have that makes you the right person for the job.
Often recruiters will conduct a phone screen before inviting you in for a face-to-face interview. So make sure you provide us with the correct phone number (usually your mobile). Also let us know the best time to reach you – so we avoid playing phone tag.
5. Be prepared
If you do attend an interview, you may need to complete an application form and provide written permission that allows your recruiter to conduct reference checks, criminal history checks and verify your employment history. Take a copy of your resume with you and any other documents that may be useful to help the recruitment process run smoothly on the day.
