R U OK? A CONVERSATION COULD CHANGE A LIFE

Labourpower is proud to support RU OK? the national suicide prevention charity.

RU OK? Day on Thursday 12 September 2019 is the national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone to ask, “Are you OK?” and to remember every day of the year to support people who may be struggling with life’s ups and downs.

At Labourpower, we believe that asking ‘are you okay’ is something we can all do to make a difference. As part of our commitment to each other’s well-being, we want to encourage the importance of regular, meaningful conversation.

Trust the Signs, Trust your Gut & Ask R U OK?
This year’s RU OK? Day theme is about helping everyone to feel confident that they know the signs someone might need support by listening to what they’re saying, seeing what they’re doing or knowing what’s going on in their life.

Whenever you notice a change, no matter how small, it’s important to trust your instincts and start an R U OK? Conversation following these four steps:

1. Ask are you okay?

2. Listen

3. Encourage action

4. Check-in

RU OK? It’s a simple question, but it can be a tough one to ask. So check out the RU OK? website where you will find some fantastic resources to help you feel more confident asking.

Self-care Is Important
Self-care is also really important but all too often people put the needs of their families, friends and work commitments before their own. RU OK? recognises that sometimes when life seems tough it can seem almost impossible to get back to that place where we are feeling good and hopeful for the future. Learn more about the self-care regimes some of the R U OK? Ambassadors that help them regain their sense of wellbeing and peace-of-mind.

CONNECTING SKILLS TRAINING WITH JOB OUTCOMES

National Skills Week 2019: August 26th – September 1st, 2019 marks a time to celebrate the important contributions vocational education and training ( VET ) makes to the lives of many Australians.

In recognition of National Skills Week 2019: Real Skills for Real Careers – Labourpower’s National Training Manager Tim Brown talks us through the importance of training in today’s workplace and the emerging trends and new growth drivers connecting skills training with job outcomes.

Why are weeks such a National Skills Week important?

Apprenticeships and other VET training programs can sometimes be overlooked but they offer a chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications that help people follow meaningful career paths.
This week is a timely reminder of the importance of training programs for individuals and businesses across the country. No matter if it’s an individual looking to upskill, or employers looking to support skills growth and optimise talent in the workplace – National Skills Week – helps raise awareness of the options available.

What type of training programs are businesses asking for?

In keeping with this year’s National Skills Week theme – Real Skills for Real Careers – we find that companies are increasingly recognising the value of developing skills within their own organisations.

When a client chooses Labourpower as their training service provider, we can design a customised training program and also advise clients about any available government-funded incentives that maybe available to employers to help subsidise employee training programs.

One of the more popular current trends is for LP Training Services to run on-site tailored training programs that meet the specific needs of a business.

Tell us more about the customised programs from LP Training Services

LP Training Services was created as part Labourpower’s aim to revolutionise the scope of the recruitment industry within Australia.

Example 1: Skill gaps
Labourpower recently developed a training program to fill a skills shortage for one of our clients in the Transport Industry. We developed a customised cadetship program for the company to use in New South Wales and Queensland. Through this program, the client now has the freedom to employ any driver and upskill them to have the correct licence necessary for their business needs. The training designed by Labourpower also qualified for government subsidies allowing the company to pay to upskill their team and recoup some of the associated cost.

Example 2: Tailored training
Labourpower’s LP Training Services is not just for labour hire clients as we can also service the training needs of any employer across Australia. We were recently approached by a HR manager in a retail sales environment to help design a tailored program that can be rolled out across the organisation and linked to pay increases and their EBA. Once particular skill-sets are identified for individuals and the business – LP Training Services provides an on-site trainer to run a relevant training course.

Example 3: Apprenticeships
Labourpower also has active Australian apprenticeships across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria to help target a skills shortage in some areas. Through our apprenticeship program we have been able to upskill staff and develop a team of people holding qualifications in skills shortage areas.

Example 4: Leadership programs
Hiring and training new people for the team can be a costly exercise for employers with existing team members being more experienced and productive than a new employee. To help increase staff retention, career development incentives can be effective such as leadership development programs. Labourpower offers a leadership and management training plan to help businesses develop leaders for the future.

6 BENEFITS OF HIRING CONTRACT STAFF

Efficient staffing can be one of the most stressful aspects of any business. In fact, your staff can have a big impact on your bottom line and whilst some employers like the security of having a fleet of full-time employees, in many cases the best way to meet the needs of your business is to hire contract staff. Here are some of the reasons hiring contract staff might be the right solution for your business.

Manage Peaks and Troughs
A major benefit of hiring contract employees is that you get to effectively manage fluctuations in the workload. Demands on your business constantly change, so hiring contract staff (e.g. during peak periods of activity) allows you to bring staff exactly when your business needs them. This way you never have people sitting around with nothing to do and it’s a cost-effective way for your business to get the staff you need.

Evaluate Talent
With contract staff you get access to a lot of talent, without the commitment of a full-time hire. Contract staff work hard to prove themselves and you get to witness and evaluate their potential on the job every single day. Best of all – if you find someone who is a perfect fit for your business, you can offer them full-time work.

Gain Access to Niche Skills
Contract employment helps you gain access to workers with a specialised skill set. So if your business needs a specific set of skills or expert advice for a particular project, the benefit of hiring contract staff is that you gain access to short term talent with niche skills, without having to integrate them into your workforce full-time.

Protect your Workforce
Your core staff members are valuable assets and it’s in your best interest to protect them from overwork, burnout and stress by bringing in additional staff to support them during peak periods. Contract staff will reduce the pressure on your internal resources so that they can continue to work at their peak all year round.

Focus on your Core Business
Staffing can be a headache at times but outsourcing your recruitment work can free you up to focus on more important things. A recruitment agency will take care of every aspect of labour hire from applicant screening to payroll, inductions, workplace health and safety and more. With your recruitment needs taken care of, you’ll be free to focus on your core business.

Excellence in Workforce Management
Another major advantage of hiring contract staff through a labour hire agency is that you get access to state-of-the-art technology to help manage your entire staffing, such as, scheduling, forecasting, budgeting, attendance, performance management and a whole range of tracking, reporting and analysis.

Working with Labourpower, for example, clients have access to the Labourpower Online Portal which delivers a best practice HR workforce management solution with live access to valuable data and comprehensive online reporting capabilities that give clients complete transparency over your entire labour hire operation.

If you would like to discuss the benefits of contract staff for your business, the team at Labourpower is here to discuss getting the right people on-site. Speak to our team today and learn more about how we can effectively meet all your staffing needs.

Introducing the Labourpower Online Portal
The Labourpower Online Portal delivers a best practice HR Workforce management solution and provides clients with live access to valuable data.

The state-of-the-art portal features comprehensive online reporting capabilities that gives clients transparency over the entire labour hire operation.

OPEN AND TRANSPARENT REPORTING

We want our clients to save time and effort when it comes to gathering reports, collating data and analysing their labour spend.

Through the Labourpower Online Portal clients now have direct access to view invoices, make invoicing enquires and generate weekly labour spend reports as and when they require.

Introducing the Labourpower Recruitment Kiosks

Labourpower has also introduced user-friendly Recruitment Kiosks as part of our commitment to create new efficiencies for candidates, staff and clients.

The touchscreen kiosk allows job applications to be completed at any Labourpower location (including remote offices), with a support team on hand to help any candidates who may be unfamiliar with technology, lack computer skills or are apprehensive about using touchscreens for the first time.

USER-FRIENDLY SOLUTION

Our user-friendly Kiosks reduce the time and cost associated with paper-based job application processing, giving Labourpower Consultants more time to engage with candidates.

Labourpower recruiters can also access applications and assess candidates in a timelier manner resulting in positions being filled faster.

Labourpower is committed to ongoing investment in technology and innovation that allows us to customise and adapt our services to meet the specific needs of our clients and candidates.

We look forward to sharing news of our latest technological advances and solutions that we believe to be like nothing else being offered in the industry at the present time.

LABOURPOWER SHARES ‘HOT NETWORKING TIPS’ AS PART OF THE UTS ACCOMPLISH AWARD PROGRAM

The Labourpower HR team was invited to attend the UTS Accomplish Award – Networking Afternoon Tea on Monday, 15 April 2019 to meet with students and provide them with a few ‘Hot Networking Tips’ as well as some real-world networking experience.

The UTS Accomplish Award is a year-long program aimed at giving students the opportunity to gain practical and industry-relevant skills to build confidence and enhance their employability success.

The Networking Afternoon Tea allowed students to practice their networking skills and expand their own network by meeting professionals in their area of interest.
Our team shared some useful tips to help students get the most out of networking events.

Have a Positive Mindset
Your networking event is going to be all the more successful with the right attitude. It’s not about what you’re going to gain from the event but instead ask yourself –
“What have I got to offer the people I’m going to meet today?”

Be Mindful of Your Body Language
It’s important to be aware of your body language as it has a definite role to play in the type of first impression you make with people. When attending a networking event think about your:

Eye contact and facial expression
Maintaining eye contact shows that you’re interested in the person you’re speaking to rather than scanning the room to see what else is happening. A slight nod of the head can show you’re following the conversation and a smile helps convey warmth and sincerity.

Arm gestures and body stance
Some gestures maybe seen as defensive or convey boredom such as crossing your arms, clutching a drink close to your chest or holding onto a plate of food that prevents you shaking hands. You want to be seen as approachable so try to adopt an open posture and face any person you’re speaking to in an open and relaxed manner.

Labourpower National HR Manager Brooke Horbury says that being able to demonstrate soft skills can be a point of difference at an interview and help get candidates noticed by potential employers.

“It’s encouraging to see a program like the UTS Accomplish Award focused on giving students the type of soft skills and experience that can help them stand out,” she said.
“Thanks to UTS for inviting us to take part in the networking event and to the students for being so curious about Labourpower as an employer.”

LUKE WEBBER WINS BUSINESS LEADER OF THE YEAR AT THE RECRUITMENT INTERNATIONAL AWARDS 2019

Labourpower is excited to announce that Managing Director, Luke Webber has won Business Leader of the Year at the Recruitment International (RI) Awards for 2019.

The announcement was made at a gala awards dinner held in Sydney on Wednesday, 10 April 2019 with Luke and members of the Labourpower team joining recruitment professionals from all over the country.

The RI Awards are a prestigious awards program aimed at recognising innovation and best practice in the Australian recruitment industry with an incredible range of industry leaders forming the judging panel.

The Business Leader of the Year is a high esteemed category that recognises visionary leaders in the industry. This award validates all the great things Luke does not only for Labourpower but also for the recruitment industry as a whole.

As Managing Director of Labourpower, Luke set out to make a real difference in the recruitment world and to the lives of Australians

“For over 16 years we have been strongly focused on delivering innovative solutions for clients and candidates with a national presence, local expertise approach that has seen Labourpower go from strength to strength,” he said.

“It’s a success that we don’t take for granted and it continually drives our desire to give back with our business staffed by teams committed to playing an active role in their local communities.”

At the core of Luke’s drive and determination is the desire to help people overcome obstacles they may face to finding work. In 2018 he appointed an Inclusion Consultant to focus on programs that help job seekers, particularly those in minority groups.

Following a successful trial in Queensland, Luke also launched Labourpower’s Be the Difference program, to create opportunities for the homeless and those sleeping rough across Australia, with access to employment, training, upskilling and ongoing support.

Through his leadership Luke is able to inspire a shared vision across Labourpower that sees the entire team working towards this goal.

“I have the support of a great team at Labourpower and I am extremely proud of our commitment to creating opportunities for all Australians.”

Luke believes that Labourpower and the recruitment industry as a whole has an active role to play in helping homeless individuals get back into the workplace.

“People are our business so my priority now is to ensure we continue to develop programs that empower individuals so they can make a valuable contribution to the workforce.”

Luke’s win comes off the back of Labourpower’s award success last year as winner of the National Recruitment Company of the Year.

This year Labourpower was also shortlisted in the Best Use of Recruitment Technology category in recognition of the company’s ongoing investment in leading technologies and cutting-edge tools that continually improve operations, service and value-add initiatives.

Thanks to everyone involved in putting together another great RI Awards event and congratulations to all the winners!

THE IMPORTANCE OF TOOLBOX TALKS

Safety Goes 24/7 at Labourpower and we make it a priority to put the right workplace health and safety measures in place so that all staff can stay safe and well at work.
One of the ways we achieve this is by providing regular on-site Toolbox Talks on a whole range of preventative topics as well as delivering tailored workplace health and safety sessions in response to any issue that may arise in the workplace.

What is a Toolbox Talk?
A Toolbox Talk is another term for a safety meeting, often held with your co-workers at the start (or during) your shift or in response to particular safety concerns in the workplace.
Toolbox Talks are a practical way to remind us that health and safety is an important part of every working day and are particularly valuable for highlighting any changes to systems or known issues.

5 Benefits of Toolbox Talks
We believe that a safer workforce is a healthier workforce, and a healthier workforce is a safer workforce. Here are just some of the reasons why holding regular Toolbox Talks is important to keeping you and your colleagues safe all year round.

1. Increases Safety Awareness
There is always a risk that injuries in the workplace may occur in the blink of an eye, but regular Toolbox Talks can help increase awareness and get everyone on the same page when it comes to thinking about safety and carrying out safe work practices (or a change in process or machinery).

2. Keeps Everyone Alert
Workplace hazards can change at any time, but through regular Toolbox Talks team members can be kept up-to-date about any new risks as they arise including any new safety measures that you need to follow to keep you safe.

3. Reduces Workplace Injuries
Taking part in regular Toolbox Talks ensures that safety is top of mind. This helps to reduce the number of workplace injuries, keep workers safe at work and get them back home safely each day.

4. Refreshes Safety Knowledge
When people get busy at work it can be easy to overlook some of the health and safety measures in place. Toolbox Talks are like short bursts of training that recap the day-to-day safety procedures that need to be followed at all times.

5. Promotes Team Communication
Toolbox Talks are not just about raising awareness of the specific safety issues you need to be across. They also give you a chance to raise any health and safety concerns with your supervisors as well as address any gaps in your safety knowledge.

Safety Goes 24/7
No matter what your job or where you work, Toolbox Talks are important to keeping you safe and well.
Don’t miss Toolbox Tuesdays on the Labourpower Facebook page where you’ll find useful tips to help reduce your risk of injury at work and keep safety top of mind.
